vlogs

A majority of my vlogs are based around the news as our website and group is named "Midnight Media Shnack" MMS. Basically I have taken found news headlines relating to environmental issues and attempted to "take the piss" in some form, I'm not exactly a funny person so really my vlogs are about sarcasm. I took alot of my own footage and combined them with text and found images, Jeff also helped me out with some sound effects but the rest were all found open source. I edited all my footage in quicktime and after effects. In after effects I used a variety of different tools, colour correction, colour keying, masks etc and did alot of keyframing with movement, scale, rotation and opacity. Overall I think my vlogs were reasonably successful the main problem I had was quality issues. I didn't export them out of After Effetcs large enough so were very poor and distorted quality in blip tv. Had to go back and re export as a larger size.
I seem to be way ahead of group members at the moment so starting to work on website now.

Brief

In Project 3 I incorporated my vlogs onto the world environmental map and people had to search through by clicking on the squares to find th corresponding environmental issue to vlog. I think this would be come a really cool and interactive page if more and more vlogs (and therefore squares) were added to this world map with a variety of global issues, also If I could figure out a way to make it open to world wide web to add there own thoughts and vlogs etc through these squares on the map..would start creating "book" of information. An interactive, interesting and knowledgable web page.

Sick

Not any better spent yesterday afternoon and night vomiting, didn't get much sleep and woke up this morning feeling just as bad. Have emailed Morgan, so am hoping like anything that'l be alright as I don't know how much I'll improve by this afternoon for hand in but either way It doesn't look too promising on getting the rest of that work done this morning. Am not feeling bad enough to go to doctor but not sure if I need to to get a certificate. Being sick sucks!

Eeeeek!

Middle of the day today started feeling yucky and unwell, am hoping it will improve by the morning as was counting on today to finish the final touches and getting the RSS to my site up and running. Hopefull will have enough time tomorrow morning, I don't think it will take me too long, fingers crossed.

About Agriculture

This vlog is my least favourite and unsuprisingly was my last and tenth. Struggled to come up with any more ideas, basically its about we need to start realising meat is not going to be around forever in less we start to produce more. Like I said very basic and boring but gives a message in the end. I was going to put audio in but the animals sounds I found just sounded stupid and did not add much more to it..in the end decided to keep it plain and simplistic.

Where I'm At

At the moment I have my vlogs being uploaded to blip tv which is then being feed through to this blog which is all working fine and dandy. Also am internally putting my vlogs on my main site so they are there. All i need to do and figure out is how to get them streaming through, but my login still is not working so can't play around till I can get into my joomla administation and from there I'm a bit worried becaue I'm not actually using a blog in my joomla part of site so not sure If I have to add one, but last time I attempted to do that it was not very successful. Otherwise just got to finish adding audio and touching up my last couple of vlogs and upload them. Worse comes to worse at least I'm showing I can do an RSS feed and my vlogs are still actually on my site.

About Mix It Up Environment

This is just as the title says...a little bit of everything. I wanted to combine all the still images i used an make a fast paced and abstract response to environmental images. Although it is not really anything to understand per say, from watching the other vlogs you can gain some form of understanding as they all relate to each other, the fact that we need to start respecting and appreciating our natural environment before there is nothing. Audio was a bit of tricky one, played around with a few different but in the end settle on a track that had a beat working in with the pace of the images.

Blip Tv & Feed

Almost all of my vlogs are uploaded to blip tv. I cannot figure out how to get the feed working into my website posts at this stage but do have an RSS feed set up onto this blogging page from Blip Tv which I am really happy about as Blogger kept coming up with errors when I tried to upload my videos.

About Global Warming

Global Warming is a recycled piece of my work from last years cinematics, but I thought it is highly relevant and fits in perfectly so why not use it. It uses various video clips to portray the effects and disasters of global warming that have already begun to change the world, ones that are looking us right in the face but many of us are still choosing to ignore. I used all footage off internet archives as I recall but need to credit the audio track... (Enya, Watermark, Storms In Africa) which fitted in nicely will the feel and ambience I wanted to portray.

About Forestry

Forestry did not turn out quite as succesful as I planned but am really happy with the concept and original idea. I wanted it to be in a bit of a "homevideo" style but I think it may have turned out almost a bit too much like that. Either way Forestry is basically about the worlds unappreciation for our forest wood, we don't realsie how much that surrounds us is made or has some part of a tree in it and we waste it away as if we have an unlimited supply which we quite blatantly don't. Is a bit of a contrdictory vlog as I am wasting and screwing up paper as I'm making ( but for the record most of it was old paper), my audio was obviously already in there with me talking away.

About Transport

This vlog I had alot of fun with. I drew a storyboard I guess you could call it about the disadvantages of taking the car and the advantages of not, it is attempting to involve a bit of humour! I did this step by step and took images at each one, trying to bring across a bit of a comic feel. Then brought these images into photoshop where I abstracted them up in black and white a bit more to make it a bit more interesting. I also had to rewrite in some of the words as was difficult to read from the shadow in the images. Overall I think the look and feel was successful, the message came across...we gain nothing but speed and time by driving. Whether or not people take any note is another story but I am one person trying to help! For this one I really liked just reading as you went and having the blank images to look at, once It came together I decided it didn't feel it needed audio or would add much more to the idea.

Website

I have permanently incorporated my vlogs into my website. On the main page (www.taniahockings.com/letsgrow/homeletsgrow)there are 10 squares on the world map that you have to click on and click through to find the corresponding vlog, I thought it was an interesting and different way of incorporating. I will also do an RSS feed or embed them into the joomla part of my website but at the moment I am having problems logging in. Will sort it out hopefully

About Teamwork

Teamwork is a very abstract animation in relevance to the environment. It covers and tries to shutdown the idea an saying that "I'm only one person, what can I do?" or "how is one person going to make a difference?" etc. This animation was made in 3ds max using particles. Each of these squares is representative of a person, and you can then see throughout the animation when people start to work together as a team they begin to create something really beautiful, interesting and positive, A concept that can, could and should be applied to our world and environment. If each person helps in someone or contribute we can clean up and make a beautiful world. Teamwork, the text was added in adobe after affects and audio I found and changed in audacity, I wanted it to work in sync with the movement of the animation. Even though this is very abstract I think it really works in successfully.

About Energy

Energy was one of my first vlogs involving both a bit of video an still imagery. I quite like this one as it what I would call successfully simplistic. It looks interesting, it develops a story almost and comes to more of a conclusion than what any of my other vlogs have. I took screenshot videos of me writing lights into the world both at the beginning and end then added lights to still images in photoshop and worked them all in together. Audio again simplistic, just a light switch turning on as each light comes on, I think this actually is quite effective and works in well, more so than I probably originally thought. The message in this is again much the same, peoples lack of caring or concern at the worlds continual depletion in resources, power cuts are already predicted and expected this year, it just shows us signs that we need to make a change....everything runs on energy...what do we do when it is all gone?

About People

People blatantly shows that our world is growing. We are gaining 3 peope to this world every second and our world resources will not hold out that long. People summarises this showing as we grow we are eating away at and using up our resources...energy, water, coal, fisheries, forests, transport, oil and our agriculture, then the people disappering as there are not enough to keep us alive. People was all done by snapz video, using layers in photoshop (A bit of a cheat) I added people in to it completley blanked out the screen then slowly took them away again revealing the underneath message. Again I wanted to keep it simple. Audio was obvious...people chattering and continually getting louder as more and more people added then quiter as they were taken away.

About Water

Water I think is my favourite out of all of my Vlogs. This one is again using all still images, but unlike the factory I wanted to start creating what feels like more movement. Water is about the idea of a dripping tap....an the amount of water we are continually wasting without even realising it. So I aimed to have dripping taps moving and overlaying between each other but all dripping the same, and at the end the idea is the water is continually rising in the amount we are wasting but the world water resources are continually dwindling..."A dripping tap wastes 10,000 litres a year". Originally I just wanted to have a tap dripping for audio, but it sounded too fast when I tried to put it matching every frame and too slow when I didn't so I also put in some ambient background music.

About Factory

Factory was my first attempt with only still images. I thought talking about a factory was not widely relevant so I decided to incorporate rubbish and litter into the scene. It started off with just the same background images and the people changing and rubbish piling up as more and more people just sit on a bench and carelessly throw their rubbish away. But that was rather boring and after a hundred plus images was still not fast enough to make up a minute, so I started to abstract each image more and start moving things a bit and I thought this created something alot more interesting, It also meant I could double up on images without it being too noticeable. I found an audio rack I quite liked that sounded factory like and had a good beat that matched in with my increasing paced images.

My Vlogs

The idea behind my vlogs is to keep it simple, I really enjoying using images to create movement into a video, I think it starts doing interesting things when they are put together so I thought this was a perfect opportunity to give it a go and start playing around. So I want a majority of my vlogs to be animations, an abstract form while still getting a message across about the environment across at the same time. Something new, different and fresh I guess you could say.
I'm terrible with audio so will try look into some open source beats on the net that will fit in well with quick moving images etc.

Conclusion

Happy with the overall result, but if I had more time (or managed my time a bit better) and more time with tutors to understand all the complicated stuff then would like to have done this.....Firstly have a fact of the day that filters through, people can add comments. Secondly as they add the little pictures of environmental issues to the world the ability to make their mark and add their own fact...helping the world grow in knowledge and learning with a bit of fun. And also so the map does not clear each time you reload the page and the possibilitie of people logging in and having their own personal map. Just things I would have liked to have played around with and tried to figure out a bit more. Otherwise I think i is successfully interesting and interactive.

Moving on

Have got all pages done and my flash all linked together. last step is to link my joomla page to my other htmls after that all done and hopefully working fine and dandy.

Ahhhh!!!

Have had huge problems with wordpress and joomla. Had not anticipated this or realised how complicated it could potentially be! Started off with wordpress but for some reason could not get RSS feed going so switched to joomla. Got this eventually working, an RSS feed and blog up and running but unfortunately could not achieve what I originally envisioned...the comment of the day, and am not completley satisfied with the layout either. Have spent too much time concentrating on my flash aspect that this has suffered but hopefully the interactive side with my flash will make up for this. Spent at least 5 hours where I achieved nothing...very frustrating.

Sub pages

My sub pages are information or mainly facts about each environmental issue.....transport, people, energy, forestry, water, fisheries, agriculture, factories, oil. Trying to keep the layout fairly simple with a running theme throughout.

Also did sub pages for continents but have decided not to use them, would be much of the same...creating extra pages I don't really need.

Too ambitious!!!!

I think my overall initial idea was too ambitious for the time period and my fairly basic knowledge in flash, however I'm still succeeding in some parts and is starting to come together a bit more.....this is my main page...new name LET'S GROW!

Struggling With Flash

Am struggling with some aspects of flash and is difficult to get the one on one time and help I need so have had to "dumb" it down a bit. Instead of adding per say to the world you kind of scroll through the various environmental things...which are, transport, people, energy, forestry, water, fisheries, agriculture, factories and oil. All major global issues effecting our environment.
